...became the first Catholic cardinal in the history of modern Belarus and did a lot for the Belarusian Church and, in particular, for the Pinsk diocese.
During the Great Patriotic War, Pruzhan parish, like the whole country, experienced difficult times. In April 1941, Kazimir Svyontak was arrested and held in prison in Brest for two months. At the end of June 1941, as a result of the German occupation, he was released from prison and returned to Pruzhany on foot. In December 1944, Kazimir Svyontak was arrested again and sentenced to 10 years in prison. The parishioners were left without priests and prayed alone in the wing of their church.
In August 1950, the premises of the church in Pruzhany were converted into a lecture hall. Since 1991, attempts have been made in Pruzhany to return the church building to the parishioners. A major role in this was played by father Eduard Luke, who together with the parishioners began to pray on the steps of the House of Culture. Such a position of the priest and believers bore fruit - on December 8, 1991, the first official service was held - Catholics were allowed to pray in the disco hall. On February 1, 1993, the church was finally handed over to the Catholics, and on February 6, Archbishop Casimir Svyontak celebrated a solemn mass on this occasion.
