Latvian exile artist Daina Dagnija (1937–2019) left Latvia with her family in 1944, spent seven years in German refugee camps and in 1951 entered the United States. She received her art education at the then famous Arts Students League (1954–1956) in New York, where many prominent members of American abstract expressionism, as well as the Art School of the Detroit Society of Arts and Crafts, 1956–1959) and the Chouinard Art Institute (Los Angeles, 1960) in Los Angeles. Daina Dagnija has lived in New Jersey since the mid-1960s. From 1968 to 2000, 13 solo exhibitions were held at various galleries in Detroit, New York, San Francisco, New Jersey, and Rabat, Morocco. In 2001, the artist returned to live in Latvia. Daina Dagnija has had more than 20 solo exhibitions in Latvia.
