Doctor of Anthropology Vieda Skultane is an internationally renowned Latvian social anthropologist and oral history researcher who has played an invaluable role in the revival of Latvian sociology and anthropology after Latvia regained its independence in 1991. The research of the oral history research group established with her support has helped to create an understanding of life stories as a valuable resource in historical and social research in Latvia. This time, she has turned to the story of her own family, exploring both personal memories and the memoirs of other family members. The resulting family research is a vivid example of oral history, a living, important testimony to the fate of Latvians, starting from the mid-19th century to the early 1990s, when the author resumed working in her homeland. These documentary memoirs are written in an engaging literary language, are rich in depictions of the environment and life, historical and everyday details, human and personal. At the same time, the message is universal, as it creates a connection between the past and the present, reflects the values and ideals that have guided and strengthened our compatriots in their journeys in their homeland and in emigration. The book makes us think about Latvian identity and social memory, invites us to study the past and roots, maintain connections with loved ones, and understand the present.
