After October Revolution of 1917 Vitebsk bacame a center of cultural reival. Marc Chagall and Kazimir Malevich were active figures of the so-called Vitebsk renascence and particularly participated in the creation of the museum. In 1941 the works of the collection were distributed between Petersburg and Minsk museums.
