During two terrifying days in early September 1941, the lives of close to two thousand men, women and children were savagely taken away by their neighbors in Kulen-Vakuf, a small rural community on the present-day border between northwestern Bosnia and Croatia. That madness - in which victims were slaughtered with agricultural tools, drowned in a river and thrown into deep vertical pits - was the culmination of a chain of local massacres that began earlier that summer. In the book Violence as a Generative Power, Max Bergholz tells us the story of the harrowing and confusing sinking of this once peaceful multiethnic community into extreme violence.
