After the victory over Napoleon, the Russian authorities continued conquering of the Caucasian lands, but after the first battle against Shamil's troops Russian generals found it useless to fight assault campaign and started to build fortresses and roadblocks. Although Shamil, who mostly fought partisan war, understood that it is unwise to erect fortifications against Tzar's cannons and hard-core units, he built three natural-artificial fortresses (Ullu-Kala, Akhul'go and Gunib).
