Dramatic historic circumstances caused that only a few towns in Latvia have still preserved a Town Hall, the function of which was to protect a town from invading by neighboring countries. In this book the author tries to analyze the development, alterations and decay of these so important buildings of towns and cities. The development of town halls is viewed from the perspective of social, political and economic history as well as urban development of each particular town. The reader is offered to trace the changes of town halls in size, style and in a way they were situated within a town during different periods of Latvian history.
