In September 1899, Bishop Andrei Sheptytsky of Stanislaviv paid an archpastoral visit to the Kosiv deanery in Hutsul region. Here, in addition to conducting religious services and delivering sermons, he got to know the way of life of the Hutsuls, their customs and speech, founded reading rooms and donated books, convinced people of the need for education.
A year after this trip, on November 20, 1900, Andrey Sheptytskyi wrote a message "To my dear Hutsuls", in which he thanked for last year's warm reception; continued to instruct in matters of faith, education, proper Christian behavior in the family and society; advised how to deal with money and settle property matters, how to run a household and raise children.
Out of great respect and love for the addressees, Andrey Sheptytskyi wrote his message in the Hutsul dialect, which has been preserved in our edition. There is also a text by the Ukrainian writer Liuba-Paraskeviia Strynadiuk, who in a literary style describes the visit of the Stanislavov bishop to the Hutsul Oblast, where she is from.
