The book provides a unique perspective on the routine of the Bulgarian military who were thrown into World War II, a kind of war which was regarded by many Bulgarian observers as "alien." The author Nikolai Kalaidzhiev was a platoon commander in 12th Infantry Regiment. In his memoirs he describes the everyday life of Bulgarian soldiers during the turbulent months of late 1944 and early 1945. Battles were but a small part of the experiences of our ancestors. The book presents a multifaceted picture of the war, showing how death, destitution and hardship alternated with moments of joy, exhilaration and oblivion.
