The book deals with the history of the two most important exile publishing houses of the period after 1968: the Cologne-based Index and the Toronto-based Sixty-Eight Publishers. The author looks at the activities of both publishers in the context of the literary life of the Czech exile, but also makes a passing reference to other publishing houses, cultural magazines, etc. His source base is provided by his many years of research on this topic, as well as the archive of the Index publishing house, deposited at the Institute for Contemporary History of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, the archive of the Toronto publishing house, deposited at the Hoover Institution in Stanford, California, and finally the archive of the Josef Skvorecký Society in Prague.
