There is a huge gap in historiography of the Great Patriotic war connected with a campaign of 1942. At that time the Red Army lost most of the battles. Attempting to launch a counter-offensive the Workers' and Peasants' Red Army lost more than 5 million soldiers, a great deal of weapons and equipment, and finally had to retreat towards Volga and Caucasus Mountains. This is the first time in Russian literature that the events of that period are described in such detail. The author derived necessary information from those who witnessed the events 60 years ago. The experience of the defeated soviet generals suggests the title of the book – Russian soldiers were learning to fight against enemy at that time.
