Art book "Mushroom War" is a book in which, despite its apparent simplicity, there are many layers of content. In a metaphorical language, it tells about the conflict, the basic situation for any human collective. At the same time, in the hands of talented co-authors — artist Nikita Kravtsov and writer Andriy Kurkov — the fairy tale acquires another, this time acute political dimension. It becomes an extremely relevant reminder of one of the most painful topics of recent Ukrainian history — the war waged by Russia against Ukraine. And, finally, the unique art book is an exquisite aesthetic tribute to the classic Ukrainian art of Heorhiy Narbut. George Narbut finished drawing his "Mushroom War" in April 1906, and it was printed in 1909.
Nikita Kravtsov came up with the idea for his book in 2021, when Natalia Guzenko-Budier was involved in the project to honor Narbut in France. For "Mushroom War" Nikita created thirty-six author's drawings. According to its structure, the new edition repeats Narbut's book almost one to one. But even here there are variations that are interesting to follow. First of all, the aesthetics of the illustrations are completely different. Kravtsov works in his characteristic manner, in his drawings much more attention is paid to physicality. There are many voids in these works, and the eye catches a bright, emphasized simple color solution based on the use of contrasting, mostly light colors. The artist dedicates his book to his father, Vitaly Borisovich Kravtsov. He lives in Ukraine and, together with his son, worries about its fate.
