Oleg Rossiyanov is a noted theorist of literature, the author of many books and articles on Hungarian literature, prose and poem translations, as well as two collections of his own poems. He was recruited to army straight from school and took part in the Great Patriotic War as a soldier of different units - from tank regiment to artillery and infantry. In this book he narrates about the battles near Kiev (1941), breakdown of the South-West front and his wanderings in the encirclement (1941-1942), German and Hungarian captivity, Russian triumphal attack at the Kursk Bulge (1943), the months spent in field and evacuation hospitals. Thus, the book presents an autobiographic prose, a living account of gradual manhood of a young man in the dramatic military events.
