One of the first literary testimonies of the heroism and tragedy of the Rodopi village during the April Uprising. The author of the book, Angel Goranov (1858–1924), a direct participant in the events, writes this devastating story in 1892 to keep alive the memory of one of the darkest pages in Bulgarian history. In order to enrich the historical picture and to add an even more authentic view of the dramatic events, his essay also includes mentions of his father - Petr Goranov (1829-1925), chief duke of the Batak rebels. Completed in 1883, these unauthenticated records trace the fateful days of the uprising, the desperate resistance of the Batacans against the Bashibozus and the subsequent fierce massacre. For the first time, the two texts are published together in one edition, giving the readers a rare opportunity to touch the testimonies of the father and son - Horat, who unfurled the rebellious flag in Batak in 1876, before the village was drowned in blood. A single painful memory, which even today reminds us that freedom is won and defended at the highest price.
