In this book, first published in 1997, former Bulgarian interior minister Dimitar Stoyanov explains the risks to Bulgaria's national security arising from Turkish and pro-Turkish nationalism. Stoyanov is the longest-serving minister of interior in Bulgarian history, having held the post for over 15 years from 1973 to 1988, when the country was governed by the Communist Party. He rose to the rank of colonel-general. After the communist regime fell, an attempt was made to bring him to trial over the forcible assimilation of ethnic Turks in Bulgaria during the so-called Regeneration Process. He wrote "The Threat" as a kind of self-defense.
