The Russian village, its fate, its demise is one of the most tragic pages of Russian history. Writers constantly turn to it, feeling that it is here that the answers to the fatal questions about the very existence of Russian civilization are hidden, the strength of which lies in a special perception of the native land, its elements - in a special way of life, in a special harmony with the world. Dmitry Ermakov's novel "The Shadow of the Owl" covers the life of the village of Ivanovka and the village of Vozdvizhenye over several centuries, but the connection of eras in the narrative is non-linear - from mysterious failures in vague pagan visions to the current farming routine. Time, like a worn-out fabric, motley patched, intricately intertwines the destinies of the villagers. Some of them try to keep records, which, like a connecting thread, are seized upon by descendants, trying to understand the secret of their lives and life on this land. But events do not allow the narrative to continue; it breaks off, then suddenly appears again, intertwined with the polyphonic fabric of a life filled with tragic collisions...
