There were several paths to the Bulgarians' liberation from Ottoman Turkish rule both before and after the political denouement provided by the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878. After the big changes imposed by the definitive Treaty of Berlin in 1878, the paths to the liberation of the five portions of the Bulgarian land deviated and would never flow together for some large Bulgarian communities. Therefore, the book includes writings about the period until the establishment of the modern Bulgarian state in 1879 as well as works about the next stage until the major historical changes following the wars of 1912-1919.
