Making use of rich contemporary sources and achievements of Russian historical science the authors investigate the components of the national politics in the Northern Caucasus, its changes during the last decade of the XXth century. Dependence of political objectives on many subjective and objective factors is underlined; the development of ethno confessional situation in the region, influence of the Chechen War on these processes is traced. The authors provide description of rehabilitation measures applied to the punished ethnos of Russia and depict the situation with the ethnic minorities.
