“To say that this novel has several plots would probably not be original. One of them is connected with the name of the main character, Tom, whose choice is not accidental ― doubt is an important leitmotif of “The Noise of the World”, which is constantly intertwined with its opposite, for which there is no simple term in Latvian, ― it can be called blind faith, ossified conviction, a determined sense that the truth is somewhere else. Ilze Jansone knows from her own experience that the Faculty of Theology of the University of Latvia is a place where a wide variety of people with sometimes completely opposite ideas about faith and their relationships with organized religion have converged. However, the novel is not just a gallery of psychological portraits of different weirdos, it forces the reader to immerse themselves in a closed, even hermetic environment from the outside world and asks questions about the place of the church in modern society and the place of women in the church.”
