Two writers who significantly influenced Czech literature from the 1960s to the 1990s, the poet Ivan Divis and the novelist and essayist Josef Jedlicka, found themselves in exile in Munich in 1969. It was a very difficult situation for both of them. They were convinced that they would never see their homeland again. As a lifeline, they chose to write a book together, which they called The Last Guide to Prague. They wrote it for Skvorecky's Sixty-Eight Publishers in Toronto, Canada. It was a kind of dictionary, in which they tried to capture in individual entries everything they remembered from their childhood and youth in Prague. It was the smallest details: names of streets, businesses, shops, athletes, restaurants, parks, customs, advertisements, just everything that stuck in their minds from their early years. And because they were both great writers, a unique literary work was created. In the end, the book was not published in exile. Before her death, Ludmila Divisova entrusted her manuscript to the publishing house Torst for publication. It was edited by Klara Soukupova, who also provided the volume with a valuable commentary and an afterword. The book is accompanied by a set of drawings by Jindrich Janicek based on contemporary photographs. It is an engaging, readable and historically and readerly very valuable work, a unique pragensia of a great literary prize.
