Voluntarily interrupted in the period of Stalin regime, the process of developing Russian sociological tradition was resumed only in the late 1950's, after the XXth CPSU Congress. It is the goal of this book to examine the renaissance of this science that occurred during the last decades of the USSR. The book focuses on such topics as the role of sociologists in supporting and criticizing the Soviet system; historical excursus into the realm of relations between the party-and-state power and the country's intellectual elite. It contains an analysis of the varying social and political context of the Soviet society, of the general theoretical and empirical works on sociology. Using sociological data, the book attempts at critically assessing phenomena of the Soviet society's life, at examining behavioral motivation of the sociological community and at revealing biographies of individual scholars.
