This is the first comprehensive study on Bulgarian poetry for children during the complicated and contradictory period of communist rule (1944-1989). Drawing on a vast amount of source material and relying mainly on esthetic criteria, the analysis shows that this ideologically tainted literary domain included large enclaves of free and authentic creativity and high achievement.
