The history of Estonian literature through the eyes of a Finn. When Estonian literature survived the years of war and Stalinism and awoke to new prosperity in the 1960s, it was a miracle that spoke of Estonians’ self-defense and the will and ability to resist: this is how Finnish writer and essayist Juhani Salokannel, who knows Estonian literature well, describes it. This book is based on observations made over decades, interviews with Estonian literati, and archival work. In this way, a comprehensive picture of the development of Estonian literary life with the support of various networks is created.
