It would be difficult to imagine Riga and the Latvian culture space in general without the monumental Baroque-style edifice of the Latvian National Museum of Art. The building celebrated its centenary in 2005. Over this period the museum has gathered one of the largest art collections in the Baltic region, featuring a large permanent display and several exhibition halls. This monumental building is an important landmark in the densely built up area along the street; it stands out because it is set back from the road and clearly visible against the background of the park greenery. Now the edifice faces new challenges: the museum was closed on 12 February 2013 in order to start reconstruction designed by Lithuanian architecture company "Processoffice" and Andrius Skiezgelas; the reconstructed building is expected to reopen in mid-2015.
