The practice of writing down one's signature as a memento for admirers is a relatively late development in the communication between writer and reader in Bulgaria. In the late 19th and early 20th century the autograph became widely used as a sign that a personal, family or group photograph was presented to someone as a gift - which is almost never done nowadays. With time, it became most commonly used by writers in their communication with readers. The present book traces the evolution of the autograph in Bulgarian literature since the 19th century.
