Territories in the east of Moldova under Turkish-Tatar rule (1699-1806)
At the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century, the south and north of the region east of the Prut were a zone of intersection of the interests of the Ottoman and Russian empires, and then colonization by the allogeneic population who settled here in the region as a result of a long process that began with the Turkish-Tatar occupation and continues through this day. Interest in this badly damaged area, where old Moldovan fortresses were located and important events took place from the history of the Romanian people east of the Carpathians, increased in the context of the national movement in the Republic of Moldova, a movement that generated new opinions about the past of these lands.
