I.V. Shodoev's novel "The Terrible Years" ("Kyzylaydu Yildar") (1967) is dedicated to the Sino-Dzungarian war, which became the most dramatic phenomenon in the history of the Altai Mountains. The events of the bloody epoch of the middle of the XVIII century remained in the memory of the residents of the Ust-Kansky district. It is no coincidence that the people called the left tributary of the Charysh (Charas), flowing through the most extensive steppe of the western part of the Altai Mountains, Kan (blood), hence the name of the steppe – Kanskaya.
