This work is the life story of a family of opium merchants, the Taranto family. In addition to their opium trade, the Taranto family would establish the Textiles Power Plant in 1928 by forming a partnership with Halil Ali Bezmen. In 1942, during the discriminatory and arbitrary application of the Wealth Tax Law to non-Muslim and Donme taxpayers, members of the Taranto family were forced to sell their shares in the partnership to Halil Ali Bezmen to pay the taxes assessed to them. However, immediately after the sale, they filed a lawsuit against Bezmen to reclaim the shares, claiming that Bezmen had exploited the situation created by the Wealth Tax, exploiting the opportunistic practice of purchasing the shares at a lower market price. This case, known as the "Taranto Bezmen Case," and ultimately ruled against the Taranto family, holds a significant place in Turkish legal history. This work provides a detailed account of the family's story and the litigation process.
