The last of Mammad Said Ordubadi's historical novels, The Sword and the Pen, provides a broad, comprehensive picture of the period in which the great Azerbaijani poet and thinker Nizami Ganjavi lived. The novel, in which historical documentary and artistic imagination are skillfully combined, gives more space to two heroes: one of them is Nizami and the other is Fakhraddin. The book also draws attention to the artistic images of personalities who played a role in the intellectual and artistic evolution of Nizami. The novel consists of two parts. Both parts are reflected in this book.
In the example of Fakhraddin, the image of the freedom fighter, in the example of Nizami Ganjavi, the Azerbaijani intellectual, who is attached to his people, in the person of the Golden Lion, the image of a fighting commander and a just ruler is created. At the same time, the image of Mahsati Ganjavi glorifies the role of women in the literary environment of that time and the value given to women as a person in Azerbaijani literature and culture in general.
