The study presents a brief history of the Old Bulgarian sign, excluded from our alphabet in 1945 as a result of gross foreign policy intervention. The discussion about the place and necessity of "yat" in the Bulgarian literary language was initially led by our educationalists, and after the Liberation - by linguists, philologists, writers and even spiritual leaders. The politicization of the subject leads to events, the consideration of which today should receive its just historical assessment. The book is a historiographical study based on publications reflecting the orthographic views of our Renaissance intelligentsia, of the first and second generation of Bulgarian linguists, some prominent literary scholars and writers. Selected excerpts from these editions are placed separately in phototype application. The reader receives a collection of 16 facsimiles of old scientific articles, parts of monographs, notices in newspapers and magazines, documents, district letters and ministerial orders concerning important issues for the development of our native orthography.
