The book tells about the activities of a small antifascist group in Marseilles in 1940-1942. The group led by Varian Fry helped several thousands of anti-Nazi and Jewish refugees (including Marc Chagall, Otto Meyerhof, Heinrich Mann, Lion Feuchtwanger, Franz Werfel and others) to escape Nazi Germany and the Holocaust. The publication is based on archival documents and recollections of the participants.
