The book describes the features of shamanism, the degrees of initiation of shamans, clan and marriage norms of the Western Buryats. The author is Bernhard Petri, the largest researcher of the Western Buryats of the early 20th century. During 1912-1916, the ethnographer was in long-term expeditions in the Baikal region, in the Buryat uluses. As a result, he wrote works on shamanic rituals, the process of transmitting shamanic knowledge, and degrees of initiation. The book also includes extensive material by the researcher about intra-clan relations among the Western Buryats. His works were published in various magazines during his lifetime, but they were not published as a separate book, in 1937 he was repressed. And that’s why this book is a bibliographic rarity!
