The catalogue "Sarafan ensembles" opens the historical and ethnographic series "Russian collections in the museums of Tatarstan" and introduces readers to the women’s costume of the Russian population of the Middle Volga region. The publication presents both summer and winter ensembles as well as individual elements of clothing — outerwear, sarafans, shirts, headdresses, and jewelry. Many of the ensembles and their parts illustrate the culture of the Russian population of the Kazan Volga region (territory of the Kazan Governorate and the TASSR) in the second half of the 19th – early 20th centuries. For the first time, a large and representative scientific collection of winter and summer costume ensembles and individual items of the sarafan complex, reflecting local and regional specificity, is introduced to the public.
