The monograph analyzes the views of various representatives of Russian society of the 19th century on Chechnya and the Chechens. Special attention is given to the Caucasian works of the Decembrists, many of whom fought in Chechnya in the 1830s and 1840s. Projects and proposals of various officials and military leaders on the forms and methods of annexing the North Caucasus and Chechnya to Russia, as well as the experience of their implementation, are considered.
