The monograph examines the evolution of public opinion in relation to internal affairs bodies - the police of the Russian Empire, the Soviet police, the police and the police in post-Soviet Russia.
The relationship between the police/militia and society is revealed as part of the general problem of overcoming the alienation of the state and society. The data are summarized not only from numerous sociological surveys of citizens in recent decades, but also from various indirect sources that reveal the opinions of Russians about police officers. Particular attention is paid to the currently pressing question of how legitimate it is to use public opinion polls to assess the performance of various units of the modern police.
