The author of the edition was the infantry general, the Minister of War of Bulgaria, a writer and a secret service agent who carried out intelligence operations in Romania and Bulgaria. His recollections about the war-time of 1877-1878 and the first year of independent existence of the Principality of Bulgaria were awarded the Makariev and Akhmatova Prizes of the Russian Academy.
