The book is a summary of 16 years of research work by an interdisciplinary team of sociologists, cultural studies, literary critics, anthropologists, educators and psychologists, under the scientific leadership of Prof. Alexander Kyosev. The study differs from PISA in that it is aimed at all ages and social groups of the Bulgarian population and focuses not on functional literacy, but on leisure reading, competing with other types of cultural consumption.
Special attention is paid to the study of cultural inequalities and generational differences in the transition from print to electronic media; here the methods of traditional humanities and social sciences collaborate with those of digital humanities and social network research.
