Oskar Meltsas' book is an exceptionally direct glimpse into the origin of an Estonian village in Siberia. Through word-of-mouth stories, we find ourselves in the village of Zolotaja Niva, and we can read about the historical, sometimes anecdotal complications that awaited the emigrants in a faraway wasteland with a harsh climate. Beautiful descriptions of nature, traditions brought with them , bittersweet nostalgia and busy day-to-day editorials merge into a realistic whole, conveyed with a naive but highly visual mastery, in what is arguably one of the most humorous works about Siberian life, describing all aspects of being human.
