In Shifting Landscapes: Ukrainian Art Between Revolution and War, Natalia Chermalykh, who studies contemporary art, attempts to give meaning to post-Maidan Ukraine in a dialogue with artists and photographers who have witnessed, anticipated, and lived through changes in the life of contemporary Ukraine. The book comprises two parts: one visual and one textual. The first half is a selection of works by Ukrainian artists across generations: Vlada Ralko, Nikita Kadan, Serhii Bratkov, Mykyta Shalenny, Mari Bastashevski, Yevhenia Bielorusets, Alevtina Kakhidze, the groups Zhuzhalka and Shylo, Oleksandr Hliadielov, and others. The second half includes conversations with artists recorded by Natalia Chermalykh throughout 2014 and 2015. The interviews pertain to the most important aspects of life in contemporary Ukraine: the men and women featured in this publication recall the collapse of the USSR, the first years of independence, the events of the Orange Revolution, and the unbelievable solidarity of activists on the Maidan and in the war in eastern Ukraine seen in the present day.
