The present edition is dedicated to one of the most interesting phenomena of the Russian folk art - painting of dwelling houses in the Russian North. In the 1970s-1990s the author took a number of expeditions round the northern regions and managed to collect much material. The monograph contains overall analyses and descriptions of painting of dwelling houses of the second half of the XIXth – beginning of the XXth century. The author traced the regional peculiarities of the territory, landscapes, settlements, country estates and houses, as well as the originality of their painting: symbolism and stylistics of the subjects described, the flora and fauna, many-figured and portrait pictures. The author also attempted to compare northern folk paintings with the European ones.
