It is possible that the three most famous submarines in Estonian history are our own “Lembit” and “Kalev” and the Polish submarine “Orzel”. The Polish submarine stayed in Tallinn for only three days in September 1939, but the impact of this visit on Estonian history is impressive. When World War II began with German aggression against Poland on September 1, 1939, it seemed to Estonians that the war that had begun was very far away and would not affect our fate in any way. But we were wrong. The unexpected arrival of the “Orzel” in Tallinn and its equally unexpected escape caused a diplomatic scandal in and for Estonia, undermined the country’s reputation for firm neutrality, and led to a major smear campaign accusing its eastern neighbor and aggressive pressure to demand military bases on Estonian territory.
