This volume (the sixth issue of the series edited by the History Department of European University at St. Petersburg) addresses the history of Orthodox Christianity in Russia and Eastern Europe over the course of several centuries. The contributors seek to rethink the evolution of Orthodox institutions and religiosity in the light of close relationship between the sacred and the secular and in the context of social milieu, state policy, and cultural perceptions. The authors cover such subjects as the place of Orthodoxy in a multiconfessional empire, the church's role in regulating civil law, frictions and collaboration between clerics and lay people, conflicts over spiritual jurisdiction, and the survival of religion under an atheistic ideology.
