The novel belongs to the iconic works of classical Ukrainian literature. It became one of the peaks of the ridiculous Ukrainian culture. It was a farewell of the young nation to its bizarre and decadent past. The author's satire is aimed at ridiculing the psychology and social behavior of the degenerate layer of Ukrainian Malorossians, who, under the guise of "Russian nobility", led their parasitic and worthless lives. Although the work was written in Russian, it nevertheless became a phenomenon of Ukrainian national self-awareness, a certain intellectual milestone in pushing the new Ukrainians away from the Malorossian mentality, from the traditions of adaptation and nationless vegetation.
