This monograph explores a range of issues related to the historical past of the medieval city known in Armenian sources as Varachan, in Arab-Persian sources as Balanjar, and in Dagestani sources as Gelbakh. Its strategic location on the ancient route along the western shore of the Caspian Sea and at the mouth of the Sulak River, determined its role as a stronghold for the Sassanid Empire, the Khazar Khaganate, and the Arab Caliphate. Gelbakh also played a significant role in the history of Dagestani statehood, serving at certain periods as the political center of the kingdom of Sarir (Avar Nutsaldom).
