There are books that create the "effect of presence". Marian Ostrowski's memoirs are among them. The author was not a professional writer, but he managed to vividly and accurately convey the atmosphere of Stanislavov in the last quarter of the nineteenth century. It is even a pity that after high school Ostrovsky left Stanislavov and his memories are limited to school years.
