The doctors of Jewish origin played a special role in Lithuanian medical history: 44 percent of Vilnius doctors and 86 percent of dentists were Jews (1908), about 42 percent of doctors in Lithuania were Jews (1939); the prominent doctors and public figures Zemach Shabad and Jacob Wygodzki worked in Vilnius.
