The monograph is a historical reconstruction of the circumstances of the functioning of the marriage and family institution among peasants and townspeople of the Orthodox faith in the territories of Left Bank Ukraine in the second half of the 18th - the first half of the 19th centuries. On the basis of processing a representative set of sources - archival and published, official and statistical documentation, memoirs and periodicals, folklore and ethnographic materials, the author investigated various aspects of marriage. The legislative regulation of marriage by the state and the church, marriage strategies and relations within Ukrainian society, sexual age and seasonal characteristics of marriages, the problem of the norm in marital behavior and various sexual deviations from it underwent a thorough analysis.
