Bela Grunwald (1839-1891), whose name is associated with the closure of three Slovak grammar schools and the Slovak Matrix in 1874, became the most negative, almost devilish figure on the Slovak side - he did not ask the question, what motivated him, how can his actions be explained? The search for an answer requires uncovering the characteristic features of the social and political environment in which Bela Grunwald lived, and which formed the background to his crackdown on Slovak institutions. What was Zvolen County like in the second third of the 19th century? What were the fault lines that divided the local elite in terms of language, politics, religion or other aspects? What position did Grunwald have in this elite? However, the answer must also be sought to the question: can his anti-Slovak stance be explained by his personal life story? What role did his origins and family background play? We must also look at his love affairs, specifically the fact that Grunwald as a private person became an object of ridicule in the eyes of the Slovak social public.
