The book recounts life and activities of Modest Korf, a remarkable Russian statesman and eyewitness of Decembrists' revolt, who together with A.Pushkin and V.Kiukhelbeker graduated from Tsarskoselskii lyceum. Korf was the head of the Imperial Public library for 12 years, and with his arrival the period of decline in the library's history changed into the epoch of steep ascent turning the library into one of the main centers of national culture.
