The author of the monograph “Lithuanian Riddles: Functioning and Poetics” Dr. Aelita Kensminiene has been working with riddles at the Institute of Lithuanian Literature and Folklore for a quarter of a century. The monograph dedicated solely to riddles, as a separate folklore genre, is the first and only one in Lithuania, and one of the few in the world. The monograph covers the overall picture, shows the history of this genre, its purpose, complexity, developed means of expression, the main principles of poetics and the driving theme of affirming vitality behind all this. Riddles, one of the oldest intellectual games, influenced the formation of thinking and language: as the study of the poetics of riddles has shown, while affirming the symmetry and integrity of the world, they simultaneously introduced the ability to look at it from a different point of view, not to be afraid to playfully deal with the accepted order, and demonstrated the possibility of crossing boundaries.
